With more than 4,700 employees across the nation, Hearst Newspapers publishes 15 dailies and 36 weeklies in cities including Houston, San Francisco, San Antonio and Albany. In 2001, Swartz left SmartMoney to become executive vice president of Hearst Newspapers, working with then group president George Irish, and served in that capacity until 2009. In 1995, Swartz was named president and CEO of SmartMoney. Under Swartz’s leadership, SmartMoney magazine won two National Magazine Awards and was Advertising Age’s Magazine of the Year. It was launched by Hearst and News Corp.’s Dow Jones unit in 1991. Swartz left the Journal to serve as the founding editor of SmartMoney magazine, a venture that grew to include a robust website and a custom publishing business. He quickly moved up the ladder, becoming an editor for the Journal’s Page One staff in 1989. “I look forward to working with him, our Board and my 20,000 colleagues around the world to continue this path of growth, innovation and diversification."Īfter graduating from Harvard, Swartz began his career as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal in 1984. "What Frank has built over the past 30 years is remarkable,” Swartz said. "Steve has dedicated himself to our company for more than two decades and during the past two years we have been working side-by-side to position Hearst for our next 100 years,” Bennack said. He is also a director of Hearst Corporation, a trustee of the trust established under the will of William Randolph Hearst and a director of the two Hearst Foundations. Bennack, Jr., as CEO of the company in June, Swartz has served Hearst in varied roles for 20 years-and has three decades of media industry experience. Swartz has the kind of breadth needed at a company like Hearst: expertise in both editorial and business roles across varied mediums.
